McPherson High School joined schools across the nation this week to light up high schools in support of the Class of 2020. At 8:20 p.m., Friday, which is 20:20 in military time, lights at Grant Complex, the Roundhouse, MAC Stadium, MHS Tennis Courts and the MHS Theater were turned on. The lights stayed on for 20 minutes, encouraging the Class of 2020 to “be the light.”
“I happened to drive by and saw the stadium lit up,” Gerald Ellis said. “Seeing those lights got this old man excited. I thought for a minute everything was back to normal and it was time for a game.”
While things are not back to normal, one consistent in McPherson is the community commitment to supporting youth.
“The lights are a way to show the students we see them, recognize their sacrifice and support them,” Reggie Williams said. “They are a great group of kids and they deserve all the community support they can get.”
McPherson High School will again turn on the lights at 8:20 p.m. this Friday. Community members are encouraged to turn on their porch lights, as well.
“I think it would be great to have every porch light in McPherson on for 20 minutes at 8:20 p.m. Friday,” Miranda Roush said. “These kids are our future and our light.”
