City Passes Ordinance Prohibiting Sunday Package Liquor Sales

Sunday liquor sales update, the city commission approved an ordinance to prohibit package liquor sales on Sunday in the City of McPherson. The ordinance has a 60-day protest period in which those wishing to have the ordinance repealed and Sunday sales made legal can collect signatures on a petition equal to 5% of the number of ballots cast in the last presidential election in McPherson (approximately 287). What this does is alleviate the city commission from approving Sunday sales but sets the pro-Sunday Sales group up with the proper language and mechanism for passing a petition. The commission has agreed to pay for the cost of a special mail-in ballot separate from the November general election ballot (estimated cost of $10K-$15K).
